I was sitting with a 47 year old client last week who needs a health insurance option quickly. She is limited on income and casually mentioned she is on Social Security disability and has been for 11 years. 11 YEARS?!?! Why is she not on Medicare? The reason is because she had no idea she qualified.
I met with an adoring couple to enroll a wife into a Medicare option. As we discussed the various plan options, she mentioned her husband was recently diagnosed with ALS and his COBRA was about to run out. She felt helpless knowing the upcoming medical bills.
These are common life obstacles where everyday Americans are left confused and stressed about what's to come. MISTAKE #1 People always associate Medicare with Insurance for the elderly.
Let us REVIEW the 3 WAYS to QUALIFY for MEDICARE if UNDER 65 years old.

1) Diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrigs disease) - Medicare will start the day your Social Security Benefits start.
2) Diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease - You’re eligible for Medicare on the 1st day of your 4th month of dialysis (or immediately if you do home dialysis) or when you’re hospitalized for a kidney transplant.
3) Disability - you qualify after 24 months on disability.
We are in an automation age and if you fall into one of those 3 categories, typically Medicare auto enrolls you. With that said, there are always hiccups and its up to you to stay on top of the benefits you or your loved ones qualify for.
Once you receive your Medicare card its time to call you broker to find out what Medicare options would be suitable for you or your loved ones.
